HOW TO OVERCOME COMMON INSTALLATION CHALLENGES WITH BABY GATES
CRUCIAL INSTALLATION WARNING
Installing baby gates requires a specific skill set; attempting this without professional assistance could lead to safety hazards and unexpected expenses.
By reading this article, you acknowledge that you have understood and agreed to the terms and conditions specified here: Website Terms & Conditions.
The scenarios below highlight various installation challenges I have encountered, which may reflect your own experiences and offer effective solutions.
INSTALLATION ISSUE 1: UNEVEN SURFACES
RESOLVING THE CHALLENGE OF UNEVEN SURFACES

-
- Measure the widest point at the top to determine the appropriate size for the gate and any necessary extensions. (CLICK HERE FOR MEASURING GUIDELINES).
- After acquiring the gates/extensions, use an angle grinder equipped with a metal/aluminium disc to cut the gate precisely, following the measurements indicated in the reference images above.
- Remove the plastic part from the section you intend to cut and insert it into the modified section of the gate to ensure proper fitting of the tension knob.
- This process becomes clearer once you have the gate in hand.
INSTALLATION ISSUE 2: SECURING ON A SKEW WALL
ADDRESSING THE CHALLENGE OF SECURING ON A SKEW WALL

STEPS TO FOLLOW:
-
- Ensure that the gate/extensions are ready for installation.
- Use Pratley Putty Quickset to fill any gaps and create a level surface on the wall.
- Allow the Putty to cure completely BEFORE tightening the tension knobs to securely attach the gate using pressure.
- Do not rely on the gate for safety until all procedures have been completed and the gate has been tested for stability.
NAVIGATING INSTALLATION CHALLENGE 3: OUTDOOR BABY GATE INSTALLATION
CONFRONTING THE CHALLENGE OF OUTDOOR BABY GATE INSTALLATION
While installing baby gates outdoors may seem like a quick and budget-friendly option, it can potentially void the warranty on the gates.

I recommend that outdoor installations of baby gates be treated as a temporary and economical fix. This could lead to voiding your warranty on the gates.
-
- Baby gates are specifically engineered for indoor use and are not intended for outdoor exposure due to potential weather-related damage.
- This limitation is explicitly stated in the warranty information provided with the product.
- Failure to adhere to warranty requirements will result in the loss of coverage.
For a durable solution, consider hiring a contractor who specialises in security or latch gates. Although this may involve higher expenses, it is the most effective method.
PREPARING THE BABY GATE AND EXTENSIONS FOR OUTDOOR USE:
Disclaimer: None of these measures guarantee complete rust protection; however, they aim to prolong the lifespan of the gate in South African climatic conditions.
Regular maintenance every 1-2 months can significantly mitigate the risk of rust.
To minimise rust and moisture accumulation, adhere to these guidelines:
-
- Prior to installation, treat the baby gate, extensions, and mounting kit, ensuring to cover the base surfaces as well.
- Drill holes at the bottom of the gate using an 8mm steel drill bit. This allows for drainage and prevents rust in the hollow sections of the gate, where moisture may collect at joints, connectors, and tension knobs. These holes provide necessary ventilation to reduce moisture build-up.
- Apply a light layer of Rustoleum Painters Touch 2X Ultra Cover – Satin Clear 340g, available at takealot.com, to the baby gate, extensions, and mounting kit.
- Allow to dry thoroughly (approximately 2 hours), then apply a second coat.
For existing rust:
-
- Spray the affected areas with Rust-Oleum Rust Reformer 291g, following the guidelines provided with the product.
- Check the product description on takealot.com; you may need to use mineral spirits to clean any overspray from non-rusted areas.
- The rust reformer will convert rust to a black colour, which should then be covered with Rust-Oleum Stops Rust Enamel Gloss White 340g, available on takealot.com.
